In an effort to liven up USRowing registered regattas, the USRowing referee corps has adopted a new regatta protocol, the "Make It Fun (tm)" program, to add some pizazz to what are typically stolid coaches & coxswains meetings and regatta operations.
USRowing is providing a kit to chief referees containing an iPod dock, a wireless mic, a self-contained strobe/club lighting apparatus and instructions for "bringing the party to the attendance and event scratches callouts," in the words of the USRowing Referee committee.
In addition to spicing up the land side of regattas, the "Make It Fun (tm)" protocol also adds a few on the water perks; in addition to the typical, "Lane 3, ready?" polling of the crews during the start, referees are to also ask, "Lane 3, is everything OK in your boat, and is everyone having a good time today?" Other new "fun" calls include warnings such as, "Lane 3, late to the line. No Soup for You!" and "Lane 2! You are moving into Lane 3! You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here!"
New standard issue for on-the-water officials will include a laminated card of hip dance moves to perform while flagging crews, and a box of tissues to console novice coxswains while they attempt to back into stakeboats, or scull their boats around into a crosswind.
